Wildflowers

Last July, I posted about visiting Wild Seed Farm in Fredericksberg, TX. (Click here if you want to go back and see it) We got a little carried away while we were there and bought enough wildflower seeds to blanket our neighborhood. We thought all you had to do was throw the seeds down and they would grow. Yeah, we really thought that!!

Anyway, after reading the directions, we decided to do a much smaller area and see what happens. We put a ring of rocks around some trees, threw down some dirt - because we mostly have rocks in the backyard), the sowed the seeds according to the directions. It wasn't hard, but it was more prep work than we thought.

The seeds we planted were labeled Hummingbird and butterfly garden. They started sprouting almost right away. I was worried that they would freeze in winter and spring, but they've made it just fine. I think...

But all we got was a bunch of white flowers and a few purple flowers that stand up on tall, very thin stems. We have lots of butterflies and hummingbirds come through the yard, but they don't stop here.

Mostly they visit the plants around the pond. Which is fine with me as that's were you'll find me most of the time.

I didn't know that bees and butterflies would be attracted to calla lilies. Which in turn attract anoles. They are all so fun to watch.

This is Nala. How did she get in this post? She's always following me around, but she's getting old and lays down on the cool flag stones whenever she gets a chance and watches me to make sure I don't do anything fun that she'll miss out on.

Newly planted snap dragons. They're sooo pretty and always brighten up any garden or flower arrangement.

I love pansies because they're always smiling. I thought these would be spent by now as I've had them for a long time. But they're Johnny pop ups so they're always preforming. Love that!
Blessings,
Patricia :o)

Just love seeing all your flowers. They look so pretty. Love the snap dragons. Nala is a beautiful dog. My Chico ended up on my blog this week. Just kept getting in the way while I was taking pictures.
I can't wait to see my flowers grow and I can't wait to plant flowers.

Patricia, What lovely flowers., even if many are white! I know what you mean about wild flower seeds., you never know what's going to come up...and then it's up to "moi" (us) to identify them. ;) Your lil Nala is adorable! Happy Thursday! ~CC Catherine from "Catherine de th`e Cups"

Looks like you have a wind variety of flowers in your yard already. Here are a few more suggestions that are known to attract hummingbirds. You should plant a garden with a long season of overlapping bloom, including plants such as the petunia, annual red salvia, autumn sage and shrimp plants, or the firebush.

For those of you who don't have room for a full sized garden, I would like to suggest the use of hanging baskets as another way to attract humminghirds. It is a simple and compact way to try and do so.

If you would like much more information about hummingbirds, please click the links below. The sites contain many articles about hummingbirds, video clips about hummingbirds, an informative tips booklet on hummingbirds, and much more.

Oh - I just love Fredericksburg! DH and I went on a motorcycle trip there last Spring.

Thanks for sticking with the very long story about my husband! I am almost up to "current events"! Once I get up to date - I will likely just post once or twice a week about what is going on.

I loved your comment on my blog about it being my rules! ha ha .. I am just ready to get up to date so I can post on something fun. I love to write about what we are going though with Don's illness because it acts as a therapy for me...but it can be very depressing and sad too. Just can't wait to start posting a variety of things again...happy and sad.

Hi Pat,
For some strange reason my comments were blocked and I thought no one stopped by on the last Pink Saturday.
I am so glad you liked the recipe. It is a favorite of ours, too!

Your flowers are so pretty! I just long for Spring and to go flower shopping. Some of our Tulips and Daffodills are up about four inches, tho! Brave little things!
We used to live in Cotulla, Tx. on the highway to Laredo. Pauline tells me you are loving Texas! I did, too!
So wonderful to hear from you!

Your flowers are beautiful!
Your post did make me miss my San Antonio flowerbed. I would buy sacks of the wildflower seeds and colombine and throw them out into the bed after I harvested all the weeds. Never mulch over the seeds, I always used a liquid fertilizer which I purchased from a nursery on Sunset off 281.
The bed was always beautiful.
